Jonathan Tan
Biography
An up-and-coming shipping and commodities lawyer, Jonathan has been involved in several landmark cases arising from insolvency of shipping and trading companies. Pragmatic and commercially minded, he is focused on finding efficient and effective solutions to address clients’ concerns.
Jonathan’s practice is focused on shipping and international trade – both disputes and advisory – ranging from commodities trading, trade finance, documentary credits, cargo claims, charter parties, ship sale and purchase to mortgage enforcement.
Equally adept at Chinese, Jonathan has represented and advised Chinese clients in court proceedings, arbitrations and non-contentious matters.
He completed his undergraduate studies at the National University of Singapore, and began his career in a leading shipping and commodity law practice.

Notable Matters
- Counsel to China’s largest LPG importer and its group of companies on (i) a USD 104.5 million financing of the first pair of new build very large gas carriers acquired by the group and (ii) a USD 150 million revolving syndicated credit facility for its trading arm.
- Advising an European dry bulk operator on its merger with an Asia based dry bulk operator, including advising on vessel finance leases and corporate due diligence.
- Acted for a Chinese ship owner in successfully striking out a bunker supplier’s claim brought in the wake of OW Bunker’s insolvency, setting aside the vessel arrest & obtaining damages for wrongful arrest: The “Xin Chang Shu”.
