Kimberley Lewis is a Legal Counsel at Telstra in Hong Kong, a multiple award winning legal team in the APAC region. She has experience across jurisdictions having studied / worked in New Zealand, France, Australia, Singapore and Hong Kong. With a background in M&A at King & Wood Mallesons in Melbourne and Singapore, her transaction experience includes a wide range of corporate and commercial matters, with a particular focus on energy and infrastructure.

Chris Shi, Sales Director, HK, First American Title Insurance Company

Chris is the sales director of the Hong Kong Branch of First American Title Insurance. Her main responsibility is to build the title insurance business in the region, by providing tailor made solutions to different stakeholders in the real estate industry, including institutional investors, developers, lawyers and lenders etc. Before joining the business in 2017, Chris has over 15 years’ experience in the finance industry in Hong Kong and Sydney. 

Chris holds a bachelor’s degree in Telecommunication Engineering and a master degree in International Finance from the University of New South Wales, Australia. 

 

 

Dr. Oliver Massmann, Partner, Duane Morris LLP

Dr. Oliver Massmann is an International Attorney at Law and a Financial Accountant and Auditor. He received his PhD with Major in International Business Law from the European Global School in Paris.

He is the General Director of Duane Morris Vietnam LLC and has more than 20 years of experience working as a commercial lawyer in Vietnam and 5 years in Myanmar. He is registered Arbitrator of the Vietnam International Arbitration Centre (The VIAC). He is the only foreign lawyer in Vietnam who is presenting to the National Assembly of Vietnam in Vietnamese language and teaching International law in Vietnamese language at the Ministry of Justice in Hanoi. Dr. Massmann is Board Member of German Business Association (GBA), Adjunct Professor at the FOREIGN TRADE UNIVERSITY of Vietnam and the only foreign lawyer as Member to the Supervisory Board of PetroVietnam Insurance Corporation, Vietnam's largest industrial insurer.

He has been awarded "Leading Lawyer" in Mergers and Acquisitions in Vietnam by LEGAL 500 for the last four years in a row. He practices in the area of corporate international taxation and on power/water projects, matters related to oil and gas companies and telecoms, privatization and equitisation, mergers and acquisitions, and general commercial matters for multinational clients in relation to investment and doing business in Vietnam and Myanmar. He is currently working on several investment projects as well as taxation matters and advising the Ministry of Electrical Power on building the power generation infrastructure in Myanmar.

He is holding a German Judge Degree and has worked as arbitrator in International Arbitration and Mediation centers in Asia and Europe during the last 20 years. He is a 1994 graduate of Bochum Law University, first state exam and Ministry of Justice, Duesseldorf Germany, second state exam 1997. He is holding a LLM degree in international taxation from St. Thomas University Florida- United State of America. He is certified as International Financial Accountant and Auditor by College of Birmingham. He is admitted to the Bar Association in Berlin and a licensed foreign lawyer in Vietnam.

 

 

 

George Wang, Partner, Global Law Office

George Wang is a senior partner based in Shanghai and co-heads the firm’s Corporate and M&A practice.  Before joining Global Law Office, he practiced with several leading international and Chinese law firms in Hong Kong and Shanghai.

He has a balance of experience working with multinational corporations, Chinese companies (both public and private), and PE/VC funds client.  His industrial clients include Abbott, Avery Dennison, BURBERRY, Danaher, Delphi, Diageo, DSM, GE, Honeywell, KONE Elevator, Parker-Hannifin, PETRONAS, Richemont, Stanley and TE, etc. His fund clients includes Blackstone, Fidelity, KKR, Morningside, Qiming Venture Capital and Tencent.  Clients come to him for advice and insights on mergers and acquisitions, private equity, foreign direct investment, real estate, corporate restructuring, joint ventures and strategic alliances, and general corporate matters.

Jeffrey Zhu, Partner, Global Law Office

 

Jeffrey Zhu specializes in private equity and venture capital, mergers and acquisitions, and general corporate matters. Jeffrey’s frequently represents and advises market leaders on their various investments in and out of China, initial public offerings, sale, mergers, acquisitions, setting up new operations, strategic partnerships, and daily corporate affairs.

Jeffrey’s track record covers a vast range of industries including information technology, financial services, hospitality, education, advertising, automobile, retail, pharmaceuticals, and petrochemical. Before joining Global Law Office, Jeffrey practiced at King & Wood Mallesons and Cuatrecasas, Gonçalves Pereira.

 

  

 

Maaike Van Meer, General Counsel, Aegeon Asia

Maaike has over 12+ year experience in managing Legal & Compliance financial services functions, on a local, Regional and Global level, including heading the FEC team, being DPO and managing regulatory affairs. Maaike practiced in The Netherlands, London and Hong Kong, initially as partner in a private firm, specialized in Banking and Corporate Law and continued her career as General Counsel for ING Investment Management Global and Asia, as Regional Legal Counsel for Mercer Investments and as Chief Legal & Compliance Officer for AXA Insurance Hong Kong. In December 2018, she joined Aegon Asia as General Counsel and Transamerica Life Bermuda as General Counsel and Head of Compliance. 

Maaike enjoys working beyond traditional “Legal & Compliance” functions by sponsoring/executing regulatory programs, reorganizations and divestment readiness programs. She also actively participates in company, industry and community D&I initiatives, and is currently Chairman of the Dutch Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong. 

 

 

Hilarie Lam, Associate General Counsel, PAG

Hilarie is the Associate General Counsel for PAG, an Asia-based alternative investment fund with approximately US$30 billion asset under management across strategies including private equity, real estate and absolute returns. She advises on the transactions within PAG’s absolute returns strategy and on general corporate matters. Before joining PAG, Hilarie was an associate at Allen & Overy in banking and finance team.

 

 

Johnny Xie, Managing Director, Forensic and Litigation Consulting, FTI Consulting

Johnny Xie is a Managing Director in the Export Controls & Sanctions offering in the Forensic & Litigation Consulting segment at FTI Consulting, and is based in Shanghai. Johnny is an expert in export controls, economic sanctions, international trade strategy and customs affairs.

With respect to export controls and economic sanctions, Johnny is one of the earliest pioneers and the most experienced professionals in China. In 2006, he managed the first large-scale proliferation and prevention workshop for China Customs – the key export controls enforcement body in China where American and Chinese professionals worked together and during which over 200 China Customs officers received export controls training.  During this time, Johnny also received his International Export Controls certificate from the Center for International Trade and Security (CITS) at the University of Georgia.

With a solid understanding of multilateral export control regimes, as well as the U.S. export control system, Johnny has been actively engaged for more than 12 years in helping China’s regulatory bodies and trade communities develop and improve their export and trade control policies, regulatory implementation, enforcement mechanisms and compliance practices.  Johnny regularly assists companies with their trade compliance strategic reviews, export control and sanctions audits and internal controls program development. Both multi-national companies and domestic Chinese companies benefit from his services that are recognised as systematic, practical and useful.

Johnny received a Bachelor of Business Administration and a Master of Public Administration degree from Shanghai Jiao Tong University.  He is fluent in Mandarin and English.

 

 

Ryan Troupe, Legal Director (Asia Pacific), Atkins Global

Ryan is the Legal Director for Atkins, a member of the SNC-Lavalin group, based in Hong Kong.  He manages a small team handling all legal and compliance matters for the group’s Asia-Pacific businesses spanning 15 countries across the region.  Before joining Atkins, Ryan was a legal counsel for Li & Fung Trading, where he advised a range of supply-chain management businesses with a combined annual turnover exceeding 3 billion US Dollars.  Prior to moving in-house, Ryan practised as an insolvency and restructuring lawyer with top-tier firm Mayer Brown JSM.   Ryan is a dual-qualified solicitor (Hong Kong and England and Wales) with a decade of experience in Hong Kong. 

 

 

Vincent Ng, General Counsel, KLOOK

Vincent Ng is the General Counsel at Klook, a world leading travel activities and services booking platform founded in Hong Kong. As the first lawyer at Klook, Vincent established the legal and compliance team, which supports the rapid growth and localisation of Klook globally, and provided advice on two rounds of fundraising. This effort saw Klook achieving unicorn status during the same period, further empowering the company’s global expansion and strengthening its pioneer role in the in-destination travel industry. 

Prior to joining Klook, Vincent has years of experience in hotel management transactions in Asia with Hyatt Hotels and Resorts. He is trained as a capital markets and M&A lawyer, having worked at Deutsche Bank’s in-house legal team and also the corporate departments of Allen & Overy and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer.

 

 

Erika Evasdottir, General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer, Origin x Capital

Erika Evasdottir is General Council and Chief Compliance Officer of Origin X Capital. Erika is responsible for Origin X Capital’s legal and regulatory compliance on a global scale. She also supports the business by engaging in active due diligence of prospective clients and potential investments. Prior to joining Origin X Capital, Erika was a capital markets lawyer at Milbank and Paul Hastings, a PE/M&A associate at Weil Gotshal, and became General Counsel (Asia) of the hedge funds Pine River and Folger Hill. Prior to her legal career, she was an archaeologist and social anthropologist, in both cases specializing in China, and her main publication is the book Obedient Autonomy: Chinese Intellectuals and the Achievement of Orderly Life. Erika teaches as an adjunct professor at the Department of Anthropology, Chinese University of Hong Kong. She has a JD from Columbia, a PhD from Harvard and is admitted in New York and Hong Kong.

 

 

Andrew Morentz, Director, Regional Privacy officer, APAC, Royal Bank of Canada

Andrew Morentz is the Director, Regional Privacy Officer, APAC for Royal Bank of Canada, based in Hong Kong and is RBC’s data protection lead for Asia-Pacific. Prior to joining RBC, he was the Asia-Pacific privacy lead for a publicly-traded information services company, and a lawyer in private practice with Paul Hastings and Telecommunications Law Professionals, where he focused on telecoms, technology, and privacy.  Mr. Morentz has also worked in the technology and U.S.-China policy fields, and has lived and worked in mainland China and Korea.  He received his law degree from the Georgetown University Law Center and his undergraduate and master’s degrees from the University of Pennsylvania.

 

 

Tania Sibree, Associate General Counsel & Regional Head of Legal, HSS, Asia Pacific, HSBC

Tania Sibree is a seasoned financial services lawyer and manager having worked in the industry for over 18 years.  She currently is Regional Legal Head of HSBC Securities Services for HSBC in Asia Pacific and is responsible for supporting 18 countries and managing a team of 20 lawyers in Hong Kong and across the region. Prior to working at HSBC, Tania was General Counsel for Bank of New York Mellon, Australia Branch for 5 years and before that was in a business management role running the North Asia Corporate Trust business for BNYM in Hong Kong.  Tania qualified in 2000 and worked for the Australian law firm Corrs Chambers Westgarth before leaving to work in London at Ashurst.  In her spare time, she also runs a business providing environmentally friendly hotel supplies to the hospitality sector.

 

 

Joshua Cole, Managing Partner, Ashurst 

Joshua is a partner in Ashurst's corporate practice and is the managing partner of Hong Kong office. He specialises in cross-border mergers & acquisitions and joint ventures in the Asia region.

Joshua has advised on a number of high-profile and ultra-complex international acquisitions, disposals and joint ventures throughout the region and across a range of heavily regulated industry sectors, including financial services, telecommunications, pharmaceuticals, energy and resources and retail. 

Joshua has been ranked as a leading lawyer in the area of M&A and also in the telecommunications sector by mainstream legal directories for a number of years.

 

 

Chin Yeoh, Partner, Ashurst 

Chin is a partner in Ashurst's corporate practice in Hong Kong. 

Chin advises on mergers & acquisitions, private equity transactions, venture capital investments, joint ventures and energy and infrastructure projects throughout the Asian region. He also advises on Hong Kong takeovers, Listing Rules governed transactions, corporate governance and securities regulation. Chin has particular expertise in complex, cross-border transactions and advised on the largest ever foreign investment in a Chinese state-controlled enterprise.

Chin is the sole winner of the Hong Kong M&A category of the Client Choice Awards 2019. Chin is listed as a Recognised Practitioner in Chambers and Partners Global for Corporate/M&A: Hong Kong-based (International Firms) – China.

 

 

Bernard Tan, Chief Counsel, Cybersecurity, SAP

Bernard is Chief Counsel, Cybersecurity at SAP. In this global role, Bernard helps to make SAP solutions secure and compliant with cybersecurity and data related regulations across all lines-of-business within SAP. In particular, this includes supporting and growing SAP’s business through enabling customers to become Intelligent Enterprises, using SAP technology such as Cloud, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, IoT, Analytics and mobile solutions. Bernard has been a technology lawyer for two decades and has been admitted to practice in England and Wales, Hong Kong and Singapore. Besides his law degree from NUS Law School, Bernard has an LLM (LST) degree from Stanford Law School and an MSc (e-Business) degree from the NUS Business School.

 

 

Tony Lam, Deputy Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data, Hong Kong

Mr Tony Lam, currently the Deputy Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data, Hong Kong, has a strong public sector background.  He was an Administrative Officer in the Hong Kong Government for almost 20 years and was a Director of the Hong Kong Productivity Council for about 8 years.  Prior to joining the organization, Mr Lam was a Senior Advisor to a private sector firm specialising in public policy consultancy.

Over the years, Mr Lam has been involved in public policy formulation and implementation in a very wide range of areas including trade, industry, innovation and technology.  He has played a long time role in driving government policies in these areas for harnessing the potential of innovation and technology to transform Hong Kong industries into high value-adding ones.  During his civil service career, Mr Lam has been a Hong Kong Government representative stationed in Washington, D.C. of the United States and served two Chief Executives as their Clerk to the Executive Council.  He has also played a part in implementing major cross-boundary projects including the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link at an early stage.

During his time as a Director of the Hong Kong Productivity Council, Mr Lam has led various supporting functions such as human resources development, finance, procurement, management information service, corporate communications and the Council secretariat. Mr Lam assists the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data in the discharge of his statutory duties and responsibilities, including the strategic planning and development of the office.

Mr Lam graduated from the University of Hong Kong with a Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) Degree, majoring in economics.

 

 

Elizabeth Fogerty, Director, Strategic Relationships & Compliance Consulting, Epiq

Elizabeth Fogerty is the director of strategic relationships and compliance consulting services for Epiq. Fogerty helps clients with achieving GDPR and data privacy compliance through the introduction of new processes and technologies. She believes in a collaborative approach when working with clients’ legal, security, and IT teams, and seeks to solve their unique challenges by offering them insights into best practices and by making recommendations to improve their information governance workflows. She helps customers transition to cloud-enabled solutions by addressing their concerns around data security, compliance, eDiscovery, data classification, data retention, and defensible deletion.

Prior to joining Epiq, Fogerty was vice president of legal, compliance, and business development at Controle, which was acquired by Epiq in July 2018. She has been licensed as an attorney in Illinois since 2001 and has handled various types of litigation including criminal trials, administrative hearings, and civil cases. Additionally, she managed several large-scale eDiscovery reviews for some of the largest litigations in US history.

Fogerty is a certified eDiscovery specialist (CEDS) and has delivered several continuing legal education (CLE) accredited courses on information governance issues to numerous law firms and bar associations. She sits on Microsoft’s Partner Advisory Committee for Security and Compliance.  She also holds degrees from Marquette University and Santa Clara University School of Law.

 

 

Polly Poon, Head of Proposition, Legal Tracker, Asia and Emerging Markets, Thomson Reuters 

Polly Poon started her career in legal technology as an engineer in Sydney before joining Thomson Reuters in 2010. Polly relocated from Sydney to Hong Kong in 2014, and currently holds the position of Head of Proposition for Legal Tracker (formerly Serengeti Tracker) for the Asia Pacific region, working across the many countries that make up Thomson Reuters Asia and Emerging Markets.

Polly also is the Hong Kong chapter lead for Women@TR. She is enthusiastic in challenging stereotypes and bias issues and excited to celebrate women’s achievements.

 

 

Vasu B. Muthyala, Partner, Kobre & Kim

Vasu Muthyala is a Partner at Kobre & Kim Hong Kong. As one of the only former U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) prosecutors and U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) enforcement lawyers based full time in Asia, Vasu Muthyala represents multinational corporations and individuals, including ultra-high-net-worth individuals in a broad range of cross-border government investigations and regulatory enforcement matters.  His practice is focused on allegations of bribery, corruption, money laundering, sanctions violations and securities fraud.  

Before moving to Hong Kong, Mr. Muthyala spent more than a decade as an Assistant U.S. Attorney and an enforcement attorney at the SEC. The skills developed there, including a deep understanding of the internal workings of regulators; the underlying policies which shape their approach; and their sensitivities, allows him to help clients navigate complex matters relating to Asia.  Also, his understanding of cultural nuances - from his permanent on-the-ground presence in Asia - has enabled him to provide in-depth counsel to clients across the region.  He has handled cross-border government enforcement actions and investigations across multiple jurisdictions, including Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, PRC, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.

 

 

Calvin Koo, Lawyer, Kobre & Kim 

Calvin Koo focuses his practice on representing clients in high-stakes, cross-border government enforcement actions. He regularly advises clients throughout Asia in international investigations by government and regulatory agencies, including the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission; the U.S. Department of Justice; the Hong Kong Independent Commission Against Corruption; and the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission. Leila is a qualified lawyer and currently the Global Head of Compliance and Strategic Regulatory Services.She has over 17 years of experience in international fiduciary business, focusing on global legal and regulatory developments affecting major clients segments, from private clients to multinational companies. She heads the commercial development, implementation and execution of the Automatic Exchange of information regimes.Prior to joining TMF Group, Leila held various managerial positions within the CITCO Corporate & Trust division. She has lived in South, Central and North America, and in different countries within Europe. She is fluent in several languages and is a frequent speaker at diverse panels ranging from the International Bar Association, IBC Informa Plc, Academy and Finance, International Tax Review and others.

 

 

Winifred Lo, Chief Legal Counsel, Group Legal Office, PCCW Group

Winifred was born and lives in Hong Kong. She was educated in Hong Kong and London, and has worked primarily in Hong Kong, with some time in London, and for most of the time with a regional responsibility in Asia.

She is currently Chief Legal Counsel for the Media Group within PCCW Group which operates a free television programme service called “viu TV”, a pay television programme service called “now TV” and a regional OTT service called “viu” which are all major players in the field.  Her experience covers media and entertainment, intellectual property, litigation, regulatory and information technology. Winifred also conducts training seminars and is a confident presenter and negotiator.

Her major attribute is a pro-active and solutions mindset, in any situation at any time, in wherever circumstances. She works closely with business teams and enjoys taking on commercial challenges beyond playing the legal and regulatory role. She takes pride in her passion about work, life (and all things about WWII).

 

 

Professor Yun Zhao, Henry Cheng Professor in International Law and Head of Department of Law, University of Hong Kong

Prof. Yun Zhao is Henry Cheng Professor in International Law and Head of Department of Law at the University of Hong Kong; PhD (Erasmus University Rotterdam); LLM (Leiden University); LLM & LLB (China University of Political Science and Law). He was Director of the Centre for Chinese Law (2013-2017). He is currently Standing Council Member of the Chinese Society of International Law. He is listed as arbitrator in several international arbitration commissions. He is also founding Council Member of Hong Kong Internet Forum (HKIF), Member of International Institute of Space Law at Paris, Member of Asia Pacific Law Association and Beijing International Law Society. He sits in the editorial teams of several SSCI journals, including Hong Kong Law Journal (as China Law editor), Journal of East Asia and International Law (as Executive Editor). He is winner of Prof.Dr. I.H.Ph. Diederiks-Verschoor Award 2006 by International Institute of Space Law in France, the first winner of Isa Diederiks-Verschoor Prize in the Netherlands, and also first winner of SATA Prize by the Foundation of Development of International Law in Asia (DILA). He has published widely on various topics including particularly Dispute Resolution and Space Law.

 

 

 

Eric Szweda, EVP and Group General Counsel, Polygroup Trading Limited

Eric Szweda is the Group General Counsel for Polygroup, a Hong Kong based global consumer products company.  Before becoming GC, Eric was in private practice for 27 years, including serving as the Managing Partner of an American law firm’s HK office for over 12 years.  Eric is Hong Kong and US qualified. 

 

 

Dillon Chow, Head of Legal and Compliance, Sinopec International Petroleum E&P Hongkong Overseas Limited
