    GUEST OF HONOUR

    O-Gon Kwon
    President, Korean Society of Law
    President, Assembly of States Parties, International Criminal Court

    Mr. O-Gon Kwon serves as the President of the Assembly of States Parties of the International Criminal Court as well as the President of the Korean Society of Law, which is the association of all jurists in Korea.

    Previously, Kwon worked as a judge of the UN’s International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia for 15 years from 2001 to 2016. Prior to his international career, Kwon served in the judiciary of the Republic of Korea for 22 years as a judge in various courts.

    Kwon holds an LL.B. (1976) an LL.M. (1983) from Seoul National University College of Law. He also holds an LL.M. (1985) from Harvard Law School.

    Kwon received a Moran Medal, Order of Civil Merit, from the President of the Republic of Korea in 2008. He also received the Korean Legal Culture Award from the Korean Bar Association in 2013, the Youngsan Legal Culture Award in 2011 and the Kyungam Special Award in 2018. Further, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Asialaw in 2017. He was also nominated as the Lawyer of the Year by the Legal Press Club in 2009.

    JUDGING PANEL

    Each year, ALB invites an independent judging panel of senior and expert legal industry leaders from various sectors corresponding to the diverse list of award categories. ALB is pleased to introduce some of the distinguished judges. The rest of the panel will be revealed on the evening of the awards.

    Douglas Leys
    General Counsel, Green Climate Fund

    Douglas Leys Q.C. is a graduate of the faculty of law at the University of the West Indies in 1982, (Barbados) and the Norman Manley Law School in Kingston Jamaica.

    In 1995-96 he received a Fulbright Fellowship which he completed while attending American and Georgetown universities in Washington, D.C. where he specialized in International Financial Law and Securities Regulation. During this period, he also completed his professional attachment at the Inter-American Investment Corporation now IDB Invest.

    In May 2003, Mr. Leys was seconded to the Caribbean Development Bank in Barbados as General Counsel and was a member of the Bank’s executive management. He has structured a number of loans, bonds, and swap transactions for the Bank as well as international debt restructuring for Grenada and Dominica.

    In May 2008, he was appointed Solicitor General for Jamaica and was conferred with the appointment of Queen’s Counsel. In this capacity he has represented the Government of Jamaica before the UK-based Privy Council and the Caribbean Court of Justice and in numerous other regional and international transactions and arbitrations.

    In February 2018 he was appointed General Counsel of the Green Climate Fund the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change flagship finance institution for financing climate change activities headquartered in Songdo South Korea where he continues to serve in that capacity. 

    Sven-Erik Batenburg
    Director of Legal & International Affairs, European Chamber of Commerce in Korea

    Mr. Sven-Erik Batenburg is the Director of Legal & International Affairs at the European Chamber of Commerce in Korea, a non-profit organization for companies conducting business in or related to Korea.

    In this capacity, Sven’s advocates for a fair business environment on behalf of ECCK’s 360 member companies. As part of such, Sven operates an IPR Committee, which provides assistance to member companies facing intellectual property issues, serves as the prime communication channel with government authorities on IP matters and raises public awareness of IP challenges and the impact of the counterfeit industry.  The IPR Committee has been responsible for the initiation of the ‘Seoul Low Visibility’ project, the development and operation of three-day IP Capacity Building workshops, engagement with online intermediaries on online enforcement and has provided extensive input to the European Commission for its preparation of its Counterfeit and Piracy Watch List.

    Before joining ECCK, Sven was responsible for the expansion and protection of the trademark portfolio of an iconic consumer FMCG brand.  Prior to that, Sven worked as Legal Staff at the Arbitration and Mediation Center of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), where he was in charge of the “.NL” domain name dispute resolution system.

    Sven holds a Master’s degree in Information Law from the University of Amsterdam.

    Sharon Kim
    General Counsel, HSBC

    Sharon Kim is currently the General Counsel at HSBC, Seoul.  HSBC is one of the largest banking and financial services organisations in the world, with operations in 65 countries and territories connecting customers with opportunities since 1865. 

    Sharon is an experienced banking and corporate lawyer of 20+ years.  She leads the HSBC legal team in Korea covering the bank, securities and fund administration company.  Prior to joining HSBC, Sharon was with Standard Chartered Bank Korea for 13 years holding various roles such as the Head of Compliance, Commercial, Corporate & Institutional Banking and as the Deputy Head of Legal, Commercial, Corporate &d Institutional Banking.  She also worked at law firms both in Korea and United States before joining the banking industry.

    Hayoung Hailey Kim
    Senior Managing Legal Director, 
    Dell Technologies

    Hailey Kim is a senior managing legal director at Dell Technologies. After Dell-EMC merger in 2016, Hailey has been covering both Dell and EMC business in Korea. Her responsibilities include business support and compliance for both entities.  She is part of Dell’s Asia Ethics Investigation Team and leads Compliance Controls Committee for Dell EMC Korea.

    Prior to Dell, Hailey was the deputy general counsel at AIA Life Insurance Korea Branch, where Hailey advised on general insurance matters, privacy issues and compliance cases. Before AIA Life Insurance, Hailey was a cross-border investment counsel at Samsung Life Insurance advising on capital market and cross-border investment deals. She is a US licensed attorney, admitted to practice in the State of California in 2006.

    Dow Kim
    General Counsel, Kering Korea

    Dow Kim is the General Counsel at Kering Korea Ltd. He is responsible for legal and compliance affair for the businesses of all Kering Group Brands in Korea.

    Kering Group is a global Luxury group, Kering manages the development of a series of renowned Maisons in Fashion, Leather Goods, Jewelry and Watchmaking: Gucci, Saint Laurent, Bottega Veneta, Balenciaga, Alexander McQueen, Brioni, Boucheron, Pomellato, Dodo, Qeelin, Ulysse Nardin, Girard-Perregaux, as well as Kering Eyewear.

    Prior to Kering, Dow worked for Oracle Korea as Senior Legal Counsel and Chief Privacy Officer for 11 years. He is experienced in (i) engaging in IP rights related matters including without limitation IP litigation, (ii) engaging in licensing and services transactions and mergers and acquisitions, (iii) leading the operations of the legal department at Oracle Korea with over 1300 employees, (iv) serving as a liaison between Oracle Korea and Oracle Corporation (“Oracle HQ”) and harmonizing the cultural and differences between them. 

    Jihyun Cathie Tak
    Counsel and Trust & Compliance Officer, IBM

    Jihyun "Cathie" Tak is Counsel and Trust & Compliance Officer at IBM with private and public practice and in-house experiences in Korea and Washington DC.  As Trust & Compliance Officer at IBM, Cathie has been focusing on anti-bribery and compliance advising internal clients on relevant laws and leading compliance operations in Korea and throughout Asia.  Cathie also oversees internal investigations and provides legal advice and recommendations to improve the client's compliance programs in Asia Pacific, Greater China Group, and Japan.  Prior to joining IBM, Cathie was Litigation Counsel at LG Display with extensive experience in anti-trust litigation and regulatory proceedings in various jurisdictions.  She also has experience and knowledge in international trade by working on World Trade Organization disputes as Legal Counsel at the Korean Ministry of Foreign as well as by working as an attorney at a Washington DC-based law firm representing clients in anti-dumping investigations and litigations. 

    David Soonyoub Kwon
    Compliance Officer for North East Asia, Ericsson

    David SY Kwon is currently working as a Compliance Officer responsible for Market Area North East Asia ("MNEA") covering Mainland China, Hong Kong & Macau, Taiwan, Japan and South Korea.

    For this role, his responsibility is to implement Ericsson’s ethics and compliance program into MNEA.  He also has the group responsibility for three compliance areas: Anti-corruption, Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Trust.

    He has around 20 years of working experience in legal and compliance.  In his capacity as a Head of Legal & Compliance Officer of Multi-National Companies, he has also been involved in data privacy and trade compliance since 2005.  

    Prior to taking this role within Ericsson, he was a Legal Director responsible for several Ericsson entities in Korea and overseas subsidiaries in Thailand and Vietnam.

    Before joining Ericsson Group, he worked for several multinational companies as well as a renowned local company. He is an attorney at law (DC Bar) and a Certified Compliance Ethics Professional-International (CCEP-I). 

    Daniel Kim
    Associate General Counsel / Head of Legal KoreaDeutsche Securities Korea, Deutsche Bank Group

    Daniel Kim is the Head of Legal at Deutsche Securities Korea/Deutsche Bank Group Korea. In this capacity, Daniel covers and manages the legal risks of three Deutsche Bank Group entities in Korea (including Deutsche Securities Korea and Deutsche Bank Seoul Branch).   He has held this position from 2007, prior to which he lived in Hong Kong and worked for Deutsche Bank Group as a legal counsel for 4 years from 2003 to 2007.  

    Daniel joined Deutsche Bank Group in 2001 and prior to that he worked as a foreign legal consultant for various law firms in Korea for 7 years, slight foolishly believing that in “one or two more years” the Korean government would finally open up the legal market.   

    He received his BA degree in philosophy from UCLA and a JD degree from UCLA Law School and was admitted to the California Bar. 

    Daniel is a believer in faith, not fate, and an avid sports fan, especially of the Lakers (NBA), the Dodgers (MLB) and the Korean Men’s National Soccer team, and particularly welcomes any discussion on the latter three.  

    Yong-Tae Lee, Esq.
    Professor, Intellectual Property Department, Dongguk University

    Yong-Tae Lee is a professor at the Intellectual Property Department, Donnguk University, Seoul, Korea. He is a US licensed attorney, admitted to the state of New York, USA in 1992, and received Juris Doctor at West Virginia University, USA in 1992 and LLB at Kyungbuk National University, Korea in 1985.

    Before teaching intellectual property laws as Professor at Donnguk University, he has worked as Senior Management Executive for Samsung Electronics, Samsung SDI and Seoul Semiconductor, as Partner for Kasan IP & Law Firm, and as Legal Advisor for Ministry of National Planning & Economic Development, Myanmar.  

    He has over twenty five years of legal experiences as in-house counsel and licensing executive in the various practice areas of (a) local and international business transactions and claims/litigations, (b) legal compliance and (c) intellectual properties involving patent prosecution, patent portfolio management, and infringement claim/litigation with a focus on licensing.

    Choong-Kee Lee
    Professor of Law, Hongik University

    Choong-Kee Lee is the Professor, Former Dean of College of Law at Hongik University. He is also acting as Vice President of Korea Trust Association, Korean Association of Fair Economy and Korea Law Professors Association. In 1986 he received LLB at Seoul National University, and LLM of Cambridge University in 1991. In 1994, he received PHD at Sheffield University. Mr. Lee's publishing include Standard Text Books :Trust Law; Fiduciary Law; Law of Non-Profit Organisations. 

    Mr. Lee advised Government ministries, including Ministry of Justice on Enactment/Amendment of Trust Act, Financial Supervisory Commission on Enactment of Asset Management Act, Ministry of Labor on Enactment of Retirement Pension Protection Act and Ministry of Land, Infrastructure & Transportation on Autonomous Vehicles and Mobility Data.

    Mr. Lee conducted National R&Ds include Introduction and Regulation of Autonomous Vehicles and designing national platform for mobility data.

    ELIGIBILITY

    How do I know if I am eligible to make a submission? 

    We highly encourage all firms, individuals and in-house teams to submit, as we have numerous award categories to choose from. We welcome both past participants and newcomers to join the submission for the awards. 

    Is self-nomination permitted?

    Yes, we accept self-nominated submissions. We also accept third-party submissions, should you wish to nominate an external party or vice versa.

    Is there a fee required to make a submission in the law awards?

    No, there is no fee payment required for you or your firm/team to make a submission. 

    TIMELINE OF EVENTS

    When will the finalists and winners be announced?

    The shortlist of finalists will be released around 4-8 weeks prior to the awards ceremony. The winners will be exclusively announced at the awards ceremony in November 15 2019 in Seoul.

    NOMINATION PROCESS AND ASSESSMENT 

    How are the finalists chosen?

    Asian Legal Business will compile all of the submission entries, and the ALB editorial and research teams will extensively review each submission to ensure the criteria are met in order to advance to the shortlist of finalists. We stress that this process is fair, impartial and not subject to external influences. 

    How are the winners chosen? 

    Once the shortlist of finalists have been announced, an independent judging panel will review and select their top three choices for the award categories they are assigned to. The scores for each award category will be tabulated, and the individual/firm/team with the highest score will be announced as the winner. 

    What are the award categories that I can take part in?

    Any law firms, in-house teams or individuals may take part in multiple award categories if appropriate. The researchers reserve the right to move entries from one category to another if they feel it appropriate. The researchers’ decisions are final and no correspondence will be entered into. 

    Who will be on the judging panel for ALB Korea Law Awards 2019? 

    There will be an independent judging panel of at least 25 senior and expert legal industry leaders to review the submission materials. The judging panel will be selected on the basis of their expertise and knowledge, and will be comprised from various sectors to correspond to the diverse list of award categories. A partial list of judges’ names will be released prior to the awarding ceremony, and the remaining judges will be revealed on the evening of the awards. 

    What will my contact information/my client’s information be used for?

    All contact information provided will not be disclosed to external parties; and will only be seen by our ALB research team and the judges panel. We keep the information on record internally, in case we need to contact you or your client regarding any questions or discrepancies in the submission form. 

    Where will my name/firm name/team name be published if we are a finalist or winner?

    As a finalist and/or winner, your firm/team/individual name will be published in ALB awards materials and print magazine. For more information, please contact us.

    Is my submission confidential?

    Any information you submit will only be reviewed by the ALB team and independent judging panel, whose names will be published. The material submitted will only be disclosed to the above; if there is any information that is strictly confidential, please mark clearly on the nomination form. Though we do our best to maintain the security of the information you provide, any information you transmit to us is done at your own risk and Thomson Reuters is not responsible for any unauthorized transmission of information.
