Indian law firm Economic Laws Practice (ELP) has added Sanjit Nagarkatti, former general counsel of Ola Electric, as a partner in Bengaluru, months before the ride-hailing company’s electric offshoot is set to go public.

Nagarkatti is joined at ELP by associate partner Sukirti Singh, who was previously an associate director at Ola.

Nagarkatti has over three decades of in-house experience, including corporate governance, disputes, and environmental management. Before Ola Electric, he has spent time in-house at the UB Group, Vodafone, Dow Chemical, Syngenta, and Johnson & Johnson.

“Recognising that general counsels are increasingly playing pivotal roles in their companies and handle a diverse range of complex issues, we will greatly benefit from having Sanjit as part of our leadership,” said Suhail Nathani, ELP’s managing partner, in a statement.

Nagarkatti’s hire “will help ELP further focus our offerings to promoters and in-house counsels who have come to trust and rely on ELP for their diverse needs – be it regulatory, corporate, tax or day to day issues which shape their business,” Nathani said. “Bengaluru is a very vibrant and important market for our firm. We have an established a presence there and have offered robust solutions on real-time issues which are of concern to boardrooms.”

The firm has 44 partners across offices, with three in Bengaluru.

Other firms have also been expanding their presence in India’s Silicon Valley in the past year. Emerald Law, Stratage Law Partners and Wadia Ghandy & Co have all launched Bengaluru outposts in recent times, while AZB & Partners, Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas and Khaitan & Co have all expanded their presence in the city.

Ola Electric, which filed with the country’s bourses its intention to undertake an initial public offering later this year, has hired Rohit Kumar as its general counsel. Kumar previously spent more than 13 years at agricultural solutions company UPL.
